Jason Robertson’s ‘Teletext Archaeologist’ Website Now Online

Learning about teletext at Block Party 2017.

Teletext Archaeologist Jason Robertson has launched his new website, ‘A Visual and Interactive Teletext History’, which will focus on his continued efforts to recover teletext from an ever growing collection of video tapes in his garage.

Excitingly, it is possible to donate or loan tapes, be they VHS or Betamax, to Jason for recovery. In particular he is looking for recordings from the 1970s, though he will accept just about anything of interest. For more information on donations, see the FAQ page here or get in touch with Jason here.

The website also contains information on how to try teletext recovery for yourself, with links to software and resources that will allow you to extract and edit teletext pages from recordings.

In addition, Jason occasionally stumbles across ‘Pages From Ceefax’ style teletext broadcasts. Most recently, he has uncovered an edition of 4-Tel On View from 20th November 1986, which among other things contains some enjoyable typographical animations from teletext art legend Ian ‘Swirv’ Irving.

You can see all of Jason’s recoveries in HTML form at the Teletext Art Archive here or with a web viewer at Jason’s site here.
