Man Inside Teletext, Joonas Rinta-Kanto (2012)

s: Jonas Rinta-Kanto

Man Inside Teletext is a teletext artwork by Finnish cartoonist and illustrator Joonas Rinta-Kanto, best known for his Helsingin Sanomat newspaper comic strip Fok_It.

Kanto’s three-subpage cartoon depicts a man who became trapped within the pages of teletext while searching for hockey results some years ago, speculating that he punched incorrect buttons into his remote control. He attempts to communicate with his family, reassuring them that he is fine staring out from his teletext page.

The piece first appeared on Finland’s Yle Text in June 2012, and has since been re-screened numerous times as part of the service’s anniversary celebrations in subsequent years. This seems to indicate that, at time of writing, the artwork’s subject has yet to escape his blocky 8-colour teletext prison.
