On 9 September 2026, Yleisradio Oy (AKA the Finnish Broadcasting Company) will celebrate its 100th anniversary with the scintillating sixels and astounding alphanumerics of – you guessed it, teletext art.
The broadcaster began life as Suomen Yleisradio, with a name from the Finnish military meaning a radio broadcast that could be heard by everyone. Dubbed Yle for short, it would later start broadcasting television in the 1950s, and teletext from 7 October 1981.
In October 2026, a second part of this exhibition will mark 45 years of Finnish teletext on Yle Teksti-TV, but Yle 100 is up first in the service’s dedicated virtual teletexthibition space.
The 100th anniversary theme is ‘shared moments’ with a ‘focus on people and sense of belonging’. A tour bus is currently on the road to visit the 19 regions of Finland, and will have arrived at more than 70 locations countrywide by the end of the year.

And of course, there is our double celebration of teletext art on Yle Text throughout September and October 2026! Teletext greetings cards, each around 1kb in data, have been sent to Helsinki from all four corners of the globe, each as valuable as the 10-carat diamonds traditionally associated with a 100th anniversary.

If you don’t have access to those fine Finnish broadcasts, the ever-present Yle Teksti-TV online emulator will once again be screening all artworks. And that’s pretty handy if you ask me.
