It’s a surprise party! Don’t tell teletext, but we’re hosting a get-together in its honour. Shhhh….
On the weekend of 21st and 22nd of September 2024, the teletext people will gather in Cambridge to celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime anniversary, teletext’s fiftieth.
You are cordially invited to attend Britain’s premier Teletext Experience! Learn how to make teletext art; meet those who wrote, edited and ran teletext on broadcast TV; enter the teletext time machine, interacting real-time with teletext as it would have been through the decades.
The only thing missing is Richard O’Brien and his bulbous Crystal Dome, though we arguably have something more exhilarating: the Teletext Television Zoooone! Some of them even have fastext and everything.*
The schedule is rapidly evolving*, and includes some familiar names for readers of this website. Let’s just say they may have featured in the new Teletext @50 documentary…
Doors will open at 10am on Saturday 21st September for screenings, panels and live sofa clubs (actual sofas TBC). Our gracious host, the Centre for Computing History, has been the location of various thrilling Block Parties since 2016, and this one will be no different… in fact, it might even be more exciting!
So if you’re free, come on down and celebrate teletext’s very own cake day. Be there AND be square!
*All events and times are provisional at this stage.
