Museum of Teletext Art: A History

The Museum of Teletext Art (MUTA) was launched by FixC in 2014 alongside the third International Teletext Art Festival, with the aim to “broadcast, document, archive and make teletext art available for studies and research.” A collaboration with Finnish broadcaster Yle Text, MUTA would be given a permanent residence on the service to showcase teletext art, with page 805 rotating works on a regular basis.

“These days, it’s rather complicated to find information about artists who work with teletext: if the image isn’t distributed online, you can’t see the work – unless it’s a GIF, but that’s rare. I believe it’s important that the works can be viewed in their original form. The museum is an archive, a documentation center, and an exhibition space all in one.”
–Juha Van Ingen, MUTA Curator

Throughout 2016, 12 artworks from the MUTA collection were showcased on Germany’s ARD Text, with a new piece appearing on the service each month. Dragan Espenschied’s Lucky Cat, selected as People’s Choice winner at ITAF 2013, was the first to be broadcast, while Ryo Ikeshiro’s TeleISIS (featuring Rick Astley) finished off the year in December.

In November and December 2017, a selection of MUTA artworks were shown at the L’Unique Gallery in Caen, France. Ten artists participated, with the gallery’s shopfront large-screen television projecting a teletext exhibition for all passers-by.

MUTA hosted their next exhibition, Teletext Meets Art / ARD Text Meets Art on ORF and ARD Text in August and September 2019. The works of 11 artists were chosen to be broadcast on both services and exhibited at ARS Electronica Out of The Box, September 2019. The same artworks were subsequently shown on Yle Text from January to April 2020 as part of TART2020.

Celebrating 7 years of “non-stop” broadcasting, MUTA again collaborated with Yle Text in 2021 and 2022 on MUTA7. A larger collection of 17 artists’ works were shown this time, on Yle page 805 from November 2021 to January 2022. Single-page classics such as Max Capacity’s Apezilla (from ITAF2012) and Karin Ferrari’s DarkTXT (from ITAF2015) were once again displayed.

MUTA next teamed up with TeleNFT for their eponymous debut exhibition broadcast on SAT.1 Teletext in Germany, January 2022. Artists from the TeleNFT group participated, and a charity auction in aid of Ukraine was hosted.

In 2024, MUTA exhibited MUTA 07-24 at the Poriginal Gallery in Pori, Finland. Yle Text also screened new additions to the MUTA collection from Paula Lehtonen, Ryo Ikeshiro, Erkka Nissinen, Karin Ferrari, Max Haarich and Raquel Meyers from September to October 2024.

In 2025, the MUTA Solo series began on Yle Text with 21 artworks from Dan Farrimond, broadcasting a new batch of pieces each month from January to April 2025. Following this, the second MUTA Solo exhibition broadcast the work of Raquel Meyers from June 2025 to January 2026. This included her submissions for Glitch: The Aesthetics of Failure, The Journey of the Sun from ITAF 2013 and art created at Bloktoberfest 2018 in Wigan.

In 2026, MUTA collaborated with artist and researcher Arild Boman to rebroadcast a selection of artworks from his 1979 “Excursions” exploring the artistic possibilities of the (at the time) new medium. 13 pieces from the original experiments of three artists (Boman, Peter Broenn and Morten Juvet) were reconstructed and shown on Yle Text from February to December 2026.
