In August 2010, German service ARD Text organised a teletext art competition to celebrate their 30th birthday, entitled 30 Jahre Videotext.
The winner, filmmaker and author Thomas Voigt, depicted in teletext the “things he still thinks about from the 1980s”, including the front cover of Deutsche Neue Welle band Ideal’s eponymous album.
Second place prize winner Helmut Ziermann designed “abstract paintings [that] evoke memories of laser shows on club walls”, while other entrants included Andrea Kunert, Cathrin Schwindling and the evergreen Dragan Espenschied.
So, the jury just preferred the eternally hip New Wave band Ideal to the eternally hated New Romantics band Modern Talking. What a bunch of opportunistic fools. If you look at the other distinguished entries, the jury’s bias and artistic incompetence is strikingly obvious.
